Why i think my town peaked 30-40 years ago.

(btw i am 100% aware that it has been almost a month since i last did anything to this site, i have enough symptoms of adhd and this site exists merely as a result of me fixating on learning markup languages.)

When I was putting clothes away tonight (I did something productive, be proud of me), I decided to put my radio on so I had background noise. I initially was planning on going to the classical station that I usually have in the background, as that’s one of the few stations in my area with something other than country or top 40 music, but I instead decided to tune into the only station that my town has. As far as I can remember, the station doesn’t necessarily stay glued to one genre, which can be just as interesting as it is annoying.

Were you waiting for my overanalysis of this? Before I get to the premise of what this’ll be about, I’m going to make it clear that I live in a town in an awkward spot between two rather prominent cities in my state; I’m not a part of the larger city’s metropolitan area but I wouldn’t consider myself a part of the smaller city’s culture. With this in mind, the town itself also is a weird mixture of stereotypically American subcultures. We have a gun range across the street from an increasingly liberal Methodist church, and we have a gun shop down the street from the high school; the lifestyles that my peers have built their identities around range from being an all-american christian that thinks the only worthy thing in life is high school football to becoming a future victim of drug and/or alcohol abuse.

With this in mind, the flexibility of the only form of media to come out of my town could be a representation of how awkwardly varied the community really is. For being a town that most would consider being “in the sticks” we sure as hell have a lot of different ideologies trying to coexist.

However, the flexibility of a current radio station isn’t the message I’m trying to get out there today.

When I was listening to the station, they happened to be playing songs from the 1980s. You know, the songs that would make any 50-year-old nostalgic for their youth, like Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” among others that give off the same vibe. I have come up with a theory that may either make a lot of sense or it may simply be generational elitism being passed down from my parents who graduated from the local high school in 1991.

Perhaps, just perhaps, my town peaked during the last quarter of the 20th century. Either that or corporations have taken advantage of the addictive nature of digital mediums and our society will simply never be the same again because of corporatism. Nevertheless, I’m not going to talk too much about the widespread damage our world has dealt with since the new millennium but I’m going to talk about how it has hurt my town in particular.

When I was a little kid, I remember the companies that used to have locations in my town, some including Sprint and Nissan. We also used to have so much more mom-and-pop stores that always were busy whenever I went to them. I still remember when we had an exotic pet store!

That’s not what the town looks or feels like anymore.

Sure, we may have a Taco Bell now, but the many smaller businesses that made my town unique and homely have, for the most part, disappeared. The pride of my town that was seemingly very strong back in the day seemed to dissipate starting from my elementary school years. As the east side of town began to build up with the introduction of the new high school in 2004, the rest of the town seemed to suffer and the town went from having some soul to merely becoming a crossroad/truck-stop lovechild.

Why am I ranting about a town I can’t wait to leave? Who knows. I heard three songs on the radio and I decided to think for a little too long. I feel like this rant was cut short quite a bit but I stopped writing halfway through and I didn't know how to get to the point when the writing kick had finished.

Hope this was a good read...if you read everything, kudos.

Now, what exactly am I going to do here?

Okay, I’ve decided to completely ditch Web 3.0 social sites for the time-being in favor of improving this site and/or exploring myself as a person outside of my interests. Instead of posting on Twitter or Instagram like I would typically do, I’m going to try to post updates in this section of my site. This may help me with my impulsive posting that is much easier to do on Web 3.0 surfaces, and this may save my attention span from completely disappearing.

With this section, I’m going to be posting opinions and why I came to these conclusions about them. I may even also give a little life update here and there!! Do you think I was salty on my BOF review page? Honey, I have a lot more biased and borderline-controversial opinions to share and this’ll be the place where I expand on that.

Honestly, I have no idea how I’m going to organize this page, as it may get harder to navigate as time goes on, but I’ll figure something out, especially if I’m going to be working on this site more! Anywho, I’m gonna go figure out what I want to rant about XD
